Abstract: This is an expository talk on "The Avalanche Principle" due to M. Goldstein and W. Schlag, on the growth of the norm of a long product of unimodular matrices. I will present different versions of this principle, sketch its proof and show its use to the study of Lyapunov exponents for Schrodinger cocycles.
