TitleA measure of child exposure to household material deprivation in the EU, Year V (2025)
ParticipantsPatricia M Costa, Maria Eugénia Ferrão (Principal Investigator), Marcel T Vieira
SummaryAlthough monitoring and evaluating child poverty has been recognized as important, there is little
statistical information focused on children. Our proposal, the MultiChild index, aims to provide a
multidimensional measurement of children's exposure to household material deprivation/poverty. This
index is developed based on data from the EU-Statistics on Income and Living Conditions (EU-SILC).
The ongoing research encompasses various aspects, including:
• Theoretical and methodological framework considerations (Ferrão et al., 2021);
• The interpretation of scale-related issues in comparison to other poverty statistics (Alves et
al., 2022);
• Examination of differential item functioning in household material deprivation (Ferrão &
Vieira, 2023);
• The methodology for ensuring measurement invariance (Vieira et al., 2024);
• Empirical analysis of determinants influencing children's exposure to household material
deprivation (Amaro et al., 2023); and
• Application of analysis of variance to assess the statistical significance of territorial region
as a factor in material deprivation (Madeira et al., 2023).
The 2025 Plan includes the completion of activities carried over from 2024 and the transfer of
knowledge regarding the methods in use.
