Title | A measure of child exposure to household material deprivation in the EU, Year V (2025) |
Participants | Patricia M Costa, Maria Eugénia Ferrão (Principal Investigator), Marcel T Vieira |
Summary | Although monitoring and evaluating child poverty has been recognized as important, there is little statistical information focused on children. Our proposal, the MultiChild index, aims to provide a multidimensional measurement of children's exposure to household material deprivation/poverty. This index is developed based on data from the EU-Statistics on Income and Living Conditions (EU-SILC). The ongoing research encompasses various aspects, including: • Theoretical and methodological framework considerations (Ferrão et al., 2021); • The interpretation of scale-related issues in comparison to other poverty statistics (Alves et al., 2022); • Examination of differential item functioning in household material deprivation (Ferrão & Vieira, 2023); • The methodology for ensuring measurement invariance (Vieira et al., 2024); • Empirical analysis of determinants influencing children's exposure to household material deprivation (Amaro et al., 2023); and • Application of analysis of variance to assess the statistical significance of territorial region as a factor in material deprivation (Madeira et al., 2023). The 2025 Plan includes the completion of activities carried over from 2024 and the transfer of knowledge regarding the methods in use. References Alves, M. T. G., Bastos, A., & Ferrão, M. E. (2022).
