TitleA measure of child exposure to household material deprivation, Year IV
ParticipantsAmélia Bastos, Patrícia Costa, Maria Eugénia Ferrão (Principal Investigator), Clara Margaça, Marcel T Vieira
SummaryAlthough monitoring and evaluating child poverty has been recognized as important, there is little
statistical information focused on children. Our proposal, the MultiChild index, aims to provide a
multidimensional measurement of children's exposure to household material deprivation/poverty. This
index is developed based on data from the EU-Statistics on Income and Living Conditions (EU-SILC).
The ongoing research encompasses various aspects, including theoretical and methodological framework
considerations (Ferrão et al., 2021), the interpretation of scale-related issues in comparison to
other poverty statistics (Alves et al., 2022), examination of differential item functioning in
household material deprivation (Ferrão & Vieira, 2023), empirical analysis of determinants
influencing children's exposure to household material deprivation (Amaro et al., 2023), and the
application of analysis of variance to assess the statistical significance of territorial region as
a factor of material deprivation (Madeira et al., 2023).
Following previous research, the studies to be carried out in the year 2024 are as follows:
(1) Children exposure to material deprivation in Portugal: on the variability across and within NUT2
regions;
(2) Multidimensional poverty of children in Brazil based on PNAD data;
(3) The quantification of child poverty with longitudinal data and measurement issues related to the
presence of DIF;
(4) Validation and interpretation of the Child Exposure to Material Deprivation Index Scale in
Spain;
(5) Well-being and housing difficulties Scale in Portugal and Spain: validation and interpretation.
Keywords: child development, poverty and social exclusion, material deprivation, item response
models.
