TitleBerth allocation under uncertainty
ParticipantsFilipe Rodrigues (Principal Investigator)
SummaryWe aim to study real-world optimization problems where some parameters are not exactly known. In
particular, we intend to study the Berth Allocation Problem (known as BAP) under uncertain
parameters such as the handling times of the vessels. Handling times of vessels are naturally
uncertain parameters since they are highly affected by several factors such as weather conditions
and mechanical failures. Being the base of all port operations, the BAP is one of the most important
problems in container terminals, which justifies the relevance of its study. Distributionally robust
optimization is a very recent technique used to deal with uncertainty in real-world problems under
uncertainty. In this research, we aim to use the most recent distributionally robust optimization
techniques to solve this problem. Moreover, in an independent research, we also aim to use risk
measures, such as the conditional value-at-risk, to define time buffers for the vessels in the BAP
to mitigate delays in operations.
