TitleGeneric conservative systems with positive topological entropy
ParticipantsJosé Pedro Gaivão (Principal Investigator), João Lopes Dias
SummarySince the late 19th century, when the work of Poincaré on Celestial Mechanics opened a major new
field called Dynamical Systems, it was realised that nonlinear systems have, in general, complicated
dynamics which are very hard to describe. A measure that quantifies the complexity of dynamics is
the topological entropy. Dynamical systems with positive topological entropy have characteristics
similar to that of a random walk.

This project addresses the genericity in low topologies of the positivity of topological entropy for
a class of conservative systems, namely: Tonelli Hamiltonian systems and billiards inside strictly
convex bodies.
