TitleMathematical and numerical modelling in medicine and biology
ParticipantsJoão Janela (Principal Investigator), Alexandra Moura
SummaryMathematical and numerical models, together with computer simulation, are playing an
increasingly relevant role in life sciences, namely in biology and medicine. Considering that
cardiovascular
diseases are one of the major causes of death in developed countries, the simulation of blood flow
and of the cardiovascular system in general, is certainly a subject that will stay relevant for
decades. Also, it is an exciting subject that combines pure and applied mathematics, as well as
biology, chemistry, fluid mechanics and computer science.

This project will cover issues related to mathematical and numerical modelling of non-Newtonian
blood flow, fluid- structure and fluid-particle interactions, geometrical multi-scale, and
biochemical processes in blood flow.
